However, before adding a balance pipe, it is essential to consider important factors such as the performance difference between X- and H-pipes, their placement in the exhaust tract, cost, and potential horsepower and torque gains. Although balance pipes may appear simple, the science behind how they work is more intricate. To get the inside scoop, we reached out to industry experts Blane Burnett of Hooker Headers, Don Lindfors of PerTronix, and George Rumore of Stainless Works.

Both X- and H-pipes offer unique benefits, making one more suitable than the other depending on the application. While they perform extremely well for a minimal investment in time and money, X- and H-pipes affect different parts of the powerband, sound, and horsepower. According to George Rumore of Stainless Works, the X-pipe delivers a more high-pitched exhaust note, making it ideal for those who prefer an exotic sound. On the other hand, the H-pipe offers a deeper tone with a more traditional hot rod sound. While the X-pipe creates a venturi effect, which helps pull the exhaust gases out of the cylinder faster, the H-pipe typically offers increased backpressure compared to an X-pipe, resulting in an increase in low-end torque.

Both X- and H-pipes are effective in their own way, and the choice between them comes down to personal preference. The X-pipe will usually make anywhere from two to four more horsepower than an H-pipe, but the H-pipe offers more options in terms of the length of the crossover, diameter of the tube, and size and location of the transfer hole. Depending on the application, an X- or an H-pipe might suit the chassis better, but an H-pipe certainly offers more options as to where it can be placed.
